About the Foundation
What is the Maisha North America Foundation?
Maisha North America Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to transforming lives by empowering high-achieving, underprivileged East African youth. We provide financial support, mentorship, and community engagement opportunities to help students succeed in college and beyond.
What does “Maisha” mean?
“Maisha” means “life” in Swahili. The name reflects our belief in investing in meaningful and sustainable change through education and opportunity.
Is Maisha a registered nonprofit?
Maisha is registered in Texas as a nonprofit corporation. It is currently applying for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in the United States. If granted, donations will be tax-deductible under U.S. law.
When will the scholarship program begin?
We will welcome our first cohort of students in Fall 2025. Applications are due by April 21, interviews will be completed by April 28, and candidates will be selected by May 1.
Eligibility & Selection
Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?
The program is open to underprivileged East African students, primarily from Tanzania, who are academically strong and verified as being financially in need of a scholarship.
How are students selected?
Students apply directly via our website. Maisha makes the final selection. We work in close coordination with our community partner to verify financial eligibility.
What areas of study are supported?
We prioritize degrees in the following fields:
- Software & Technology: Computer Science, IT, Cybersecurity, AI/ML, Data Science, Cloud Computing
- Engineering: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering
- Business & Analytics: Management Information Systems (MIS), CIS
Scholarship Details
What does the scholarship cover?
The Maisha scholarship includes:
- Full tuition
- Boarding and accommodation
- Health insurance
- Transportation, including travel from Tanzania to the U.S.
- A stipend for personal expenses
- Essential items such as a laptop and mobile phone
Is the scholarship guaranteed for all four years?
Yes, the scholarship is guaranteed for the full 4-year degree, subject to the following annual renewal requirements:
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Continued financial need
- Good moral character
- Full-time enrollment
- Active participation in Maisha community events
- Annual review by Maisha
Student Life and Support
Will Maisha arrange accommodation?
Yes. Maisha will arrange and coordinate student housing, ensuring it aligns with local rental policies and student needs.
Will students receive mentorship?
Absolutely! Maisha offers academic and career mentorship, with support from local Dallas-area Memon families to help students adjust socially and culturally.
What happens if a student struggles academically?
Students who fall below the GPA requirement may enter a probation period. Maisha will offer support to help them improve, but ongoing underperformance may affect continued sponsorship.
Can students change majors or schools?
Changes in major or institution are allowed if they fall within Maisha-approved fields. However, students must receive formal approval from Maisha before making any changes.
Will Maisha help with visa applications and travel?
Yes. Maisha will support students through the visa process and will cover initial travel expenses, including flights, health insurance, and other required items.
Are there internship or career opportunities provided?
Yes. Maisha will assist students in securing internships during their degree and help them explore job opportunities after graduation.
What legal agreement is required?
All students must sign the Maisha Student Contract, outlining their rights and obligations, including academic performance and conduct expectations.

What if a student needs to withdraw?
If a student withdraws for personal or academic reasons, no funds are owed to Maisha. Remaining scholarship funds will be redirected to other eligible students.
What happens if there’s a funding shortfall?
Maisha only commits to sponsorships when donor funds are secured. We are actively working to grow our donor base to ensure long-term funding stability for more students.
